Im not the creator of these learning styles - there is lots of literature and evidence online about these styles and which are more popular than others. Some literature authors state there are only four main ways; some say seven; I even read somewhere about nine. These seven are ones that I have worked from this year over 2021 and placed my students into. I always ask parents when students start where they think their students might prefer. Download this pdf chart if you feel this might help you unpack the learning styles of your students too!

This can be easier said than done as students quite often chop and change in their play during their play. For example, while observing two students play last term, these two started off as parallel play. They were playing with the car toys parallel to each other; with no engagement or interaction with each other. One student then went off to play with the dinosaurs (solitary play) and the other student simply was an onlooker - watched them play but didn't join in. Then one of these students got out the magnetics and they both were then engaged in cooperative play. Students can switch and change where they need to and for the play that benefits them.
Its definitely something to think about... What type of play are your students engaging with? What type of activities promote which type of play in your classroom? Can you easily spot students that are unoccupied or as an onlooker in play? What could you do for them? Check out some of my other playful learning blog posts or resources below!

This has been a huge work in progress that has been developed over the last year. It is integrated into learning time through 'playful learning' which is my take on play based or learning through play. Each to your own name - that's what I call it! Each 2 weeks I change the shop part of my play area. This is a combination of student led and also resource led. If you don't already know I have an addiction to Kmart and the wooden toys! Check out my other playful learning ideas here! Last year, I came across Calm Space Collective - an Australian brand of amazing calm down tools and kits for the classroom. At this time, we had come back to class after lockdown and emotion support or regulation was a focus for us in our school. I already had a calm down space where students could go to take a breath, focus or have time to reflect on their emotions to support their transition to being ready to learn in class. In my corner, I have prompts, personal calming technique boards and also a box of tools for students to use. This is being added to with each calm kit I receive or get from Calm Space Collective. Of course you don't need to have a calm down space or even a calm down kit. Its all about your students, their emotions and how they are finding the classroom. The calm down space is a well received aspect of my classroom and other teachers can see the benefits of it also. The tools that I have received in the latest kit were kindly gifted to me to continue to build this space for my students.
If you're interested in checking the kits out for yourself, visit Calm Space Collective here.

A question I have been asked lots recently is how I have playful learning (play or play based however you call it) is run in my classroom. I have a range of ideas to have it set up which works for me, my students and my classroom. We call it playful learning - taking our own take on what we think it is. Find out more information below on all the things I have set up in my classroom to support this!
I make a conscious effort to plan for playful learning in my classroom. Here i document what I am working on with key competencies, te whariki principles and school values. I write down what provocations I am using and then who I am observing as well over the week. See a range of provocations and playful aspects from my classroom this year.
Learning stories are a great way to document play, learning and the exploration of things students are doing in class. I have been creating individualised learning stories this year to be explicit about learning that is happening and link it into aspects that I am covering. I then share these on Seesaw for parents to see, in an ongoing way to build an insight into the classroom. I love creating these and always make a point of talking about them with the students too. Love this template? Make a copy of it below so you can use it in your classroom too!
Want to read more on playful learning? Search 'playful learning' or provocations in the search bar below to find my other blog posts and resources. This year I have made an active point to include play into my classroom. Teaching Year 0-3 students, it is part of our everyday learning to build on those key skills and learning opportunities. I have a few things in place that work towards this - sharing a few of these below in this post! Call it what you want, playful, play-based, learning through play is an amazing aspect to have in the classroom. Learning through play is a pedagogical approach where play is the valued mode of learning – where children can explore, experiment, discover, and solve problems in imaginative and playful ways. Learning through play is also called play-based learning. - NZ Curriculum TKI
