What is your learning style?

7/19/2021

Have you ever thought about how you like to learn? How do your students like to learn? Is there one or a few styles they are predominately drawn to?
This is part of the exploration I have done at the beginning fo the year when students join my class to figure out their best learning style. It's always something interesting to think about and view.
Picture
Im not the creator of these learning styles - there is lots of literature and evidence online about these styles and which are more popular than others. Some literature authors state there are only four main ways; some say seven; I even read somewhere about nine. These seven are ones that I have worked from this year over 2021 and placed my students into. I always ask parents when students start where they think their students might prefer.
Download this pdf chart if you feel this might help you unpack the learning styles of your students too!

Types of Play in your classroom

7/19/2021

My play in the classroom has definitely been through drastic changes over the last two years. Trailing things, making new classroom resources, looking into best practice and making contact with teachers across New Zealand on what they do.
In getting set up with play in your classroom, its always good to check in and see what type of play your students might be engaging with.
Picture
This can be easier said than done as students quite often chop and change in their play during their play. For example, while observing two students play last term, these two started off as parallel play. They were playing with the car toys parallel to each other; with no engagement or interaction with each other. One student then went off to play with the dinosaurs (solitary play) and the other student simply was an onlooker - watched them play but didn't join in. Then one of these students got out the magnetics and they both were then engaged in cooperative play. Students can switch and change where they need to and for the play that benefits them.

Its definitely something to think about...
What type of play are your students engaging with?
What type of activities promote which type of play in your classroom?
Can you easily spot students that are unoccupied or as an onlooker in play?
What could you do for them?

No cook playdough recipe

7/12/2021

Picture
I trialled a new playdough recipe which I would love to share with you! It is a no-cook recipe that doesn't involve any heating or cooking. My daughter made it today by herself - with the only help I needed to provide was with the kneading after it had the boiling water.
It can have essential oils added to it for amazing scent and take the sensory play a little further!
Picture
I've tried a few different recipes at home for playdough and this one has been mine (and my daughters) favourite. Super simple and it was ready in about 10 minutes! Could whip up a few different colour and scent batches for a provocation or to add to your sensory play! Download the pdf with instructions here!

In my class I have a designated play area. This has been a huge work in progress that has been developed over the last year. It is integrated into learning time through 'playful learning' which is my take on play based or learning through play. Each to your own name - that's what I call it!
Each 2 weeks I change the shop part of my play area. This is a combination of student led and also resource led.
If you don't already know I have an addiction to Kmart and the wooden toys! So since finding and purchasing more and more, I have themed the area to match the new toys I come across. These are perfect for your dramatic play area and are available for purchase!
Check out my prompts below that I have designed for a play area!

Calm down corner

Last year, I came across Calm Space Collective - an Australian brand of amazing calm down tools and kits for the classroom. At this time, we had come back to class after lockdown and emotion support or regulation was a focus for us in our school. I already had a calm down space where students could go to take a breath, focus or have time to reflect on their emotions to support their transition to being ready to learn in class.

In my corner, I have prompts, personal calming technique boards and also a box of tools for students to use. This is being added to with each calm kit I receive or get from Calm Space Collective.

Picture
Picture
Of course you don't need to have a calm down space or even a calm down kit. Its all about your students, their emotions and how they are finding the classroom. The calm down space is a well received aspect of my classroom and other teachers can see the benefits of it also. The tools that I have received in the latest kit were kindly gifted to me to continue to build this space for my students.
If you're interested in checking the kits out for yourself, visit Calm Space Collective here.

How have I set up playful learning in my classroom?

10/14/2020

A question I have been asked lots recently is how I have playful learning (play or play based however you call it) is run in my classroom. I have a range of ideas to have it set up which works for me, my students and my classroom.
We call it playful learning - taking our own take on what we think it is. Find out more information below on all the things I have set up in my classroom to support this!

Picture
This is a target display with information on our school PB4L target, key competencies target and playful learning target. These are what I am observing or talking about in class time. Each day I talk through these targets and remind students of key behaviour, talking or actions that could come under those targets.
Picture
This playful learning observation template is what I record my observations on. These are for each individual student and I aim for 4-6 students a week. My observations are linked to the target behaviours, but also an explicit way to document the play that I can see. I then use this to support my learning stories and assessment of each child.
download it here
Picture
Playful learning provocations is a list of some ideas for each four themed provocation ideas. These are grouped into four areas with ideas on what you can do to support this type of play in your classroom.

Learning stories are a great way for parents to see and reflect on the learning that is happening in class. These are written from my observation templates are communicate goals or targeted skills.

This template is free to download and use in your classroom.

Storage for provocations can be quite tricky. I don't have a lot of space so try to reuse/keep things in a handy place. I have four cubby holes where I keep my provocations and play learning activities. These are quick to grab in their containers and things so that when I change my provocations I can just grab what I need. Organised chaos is the way to go.
All my reusable provocation signs and things like play dough mats, writing prompts, and laminated activities are in the pink binder files.
I also have a large container tub for my larger dramatic play provocations which is hidden out the back of my classroom.

I make a conscious effort to plan for playful learning in my classroom. Here i document what I am working on with key competencies, te whariki principles and school values. I write down what provocations I am using and then who I am observing as well over the week.

See a range of provocations and playful aspects from my classroom this year.

Learning stories template

Learning stories are a great way to document play, learning and the exploration of things students are doing in class. I have been creating individualised learning stories this year to be explicit about learning that is happening and link it into aspects that I am covering. I then share these on Seesaw for parents to see, in an ongoing way to build an insight into the classroom. I love creating these and always make a point of talking about them with the students too.

Last night I shared a template on Instagram of how I am sharing the targets each week with my students. This is an overview template that I have near our school values and things like that. Each Monday I will be taking time to unpack these targets with a mini anchor chart unpacking each of these. The school values targets link to my school PB4L learning, and I really wanted to work on talking more about key competencies and playful learning too.

Playful learning

8/24/2020

This year I have made an active point to include play into my classroom. Teaching Year 0-3 students, it is part of our everyday learning to build on those key skills and learning opportunities. I have a few things in place that work towards this - sharing a few of these below in this post! Call it what you want, playful, play-based, learning through play is an amazing aspect to have in the classroom.
Learning through play is a pedagogical approach where play is the valued mode of learning – where children can explore, experiment, discover, and solve problems in imaginative and playful ways. Learning through play is also called play-based learning. - NZ Curriculum TKI

This is a list of learning provocations that I created around four key themes that I believe are important in class. Sensory, cognitive, pretend (or dramatic) and fine motor.
