Mrs priestley ICT - my story

With lots of new followers and subscribers, I thought I should re-introduce myself again and share my story.
Hello! My name is Jordan. I currently live in Taumarunui, New Zealand; originally from Auckland. I have a husband - Curtis, one daughter - Arabella; and a puppy named Fudge.
Some of my favourites:
the colour pink, burgers, watching movies, teaching, going shopping and glitter earrings.
Picture

How did this start?

I graduated university in 2011 with a Bachelor of Education in primary. I then went on to study a Postgraduate Diploma in Education whilst I was unable to secure a job. Once I had finished my Postrgrad I began teaching at my first school - Jean Batten School in Mangere. Since that time, I have worked at Rowandale School in Manurewa, Willowbank School in Botany and now Ngakonui Valley School in Taumarunui. I have been teaching for seven years now and love it!
Along those years I have also studied multiple degrees and certificates - currently working on my Masters of Contemporary Education.
Picture
I have always been interested in digital technology - digital learning, apps, software, hardware, courses and more. I first started out a few years ago making my own resources. A few things here and there for my classroom that I was talked into selling on Teachers Pay Teachers. I had a side blog that I was posting things on also and soon had a few followers wanting more of my resources! I shared what I could on my blog, twitter page and teachers pay teachers store but ultimately saw the potential for it to grow bigger.
Picture
That's when I thought of starting Mrs Priestley ICT. First in facebook page only, then branching out to this website that I have today. A place where I can share my ideas, resources, links, things I am trying, things I find and more. Where ICT, teaching and learning collide into one place. Obviously with any brand, a cost factor comes into it. But i do and share as much as I can for free to give back to teachers and help share the love.

What does Mrs Priestley ICT have?

Picture
The website has a blog section - updated regularly through the week with posts, links, ideas, activities and more! These are all free to access and read through.

Picture
On the blog section is also a link to Teacher Tech Videos. A place where you can go to watch short tutorial videos or snippets on help sections to do with Google, Seesaw or anything else linked.

Picture
Alongside my website, I run a digital newsletter called What's 'App'-ening. A fortnightly snippet of ideas that can be used in your classroom straight away. It has four sections: a seesaw hotspot, twitter finds, what's the apps and let's get googley. This is free to subscribe to, and can get emailed to your inbox!

I sell many of my resources on my website and also on my Teachers Pay Teachers Store. These are a combination of free and paid resources that get emailed to you in pdf form (or google form) to download and use in your classroom.
Access the resources on my website here.
Access the Teachers Pay Teachers Store here.

I have started something new this year with online teaching courses you can follow to learn key skills and ideas around particular topics. I have two currently available to complete - each with a certificate and digital badge available upon completion.
There is a new platform for this coming soon but for now you can sign up here!

Picture
Shared Google Drive Resource Library
I have an online google drive resource library with loads of google templates you can use and access for your classroom. There are also a huge amount of PLD slides available to that you can use to guide your teaching sessions.

Picture
On my website there is also a private section that is named VIP Access. It is password protected to website subscribers only with a whole lot more freebies that are no listed anywhere else! A great incentive to sign up to the website!

Picture
I also work alongside teachers, schools and COL's to provide PLD and 1:1 help if necessary. This is in the form of presenting, online meetings, 1:1 help sessions or just emailing back and forth. If you wanted some PLD on anything let me know.

There are also two other side projects that I have going on alongside this! Crazy I know. But that's who and what I am! A crazy, determined, organised teacher who just loves what I do and more.
Picture
Arabella's Adventures is a technology themes picture book series that helps teach key technology skills to junior students. The first of the series was released this year, around taking care of devices for students.

A side hobby I have is making glitter resin earrings! I love glitter and earrings so thought why not put that together and sell my own!

Daily check ins

Morning check in's are a great way for teachers to check in with students, see how they are feeling, how their night was or anything to help start the day well. I create mine on Google forms, display a QR code linked to the google form and students complete it upon their arrival to class. There are different google forms I use, depending on the day of the week, what is coming up and how students are feeling. I use a daily check in on most days, with the Monday and Friday check in's being different.

Find a copy to each of the main check in's I use that you can make copies of and use in your classroom too!
Have any questions? Send me a message!
Picture
Goals check in
This check in we use when there is something in particular we want to focus on for the day. It might be a goal, a particular strategy or something from the day before we had trouble with.

Make a copy here.

Weekend Check in
This check in is one that I use after the weekend. It asks simple questions about the weekend so I can get a feel for how their weekend was. This is great especially for those who don't want to tell you in person.

Daily check in
This is the check in I use everyday to see how students are going or how prepared they are for the day. This is the usual check in that my class uses.

I need to tell you something check in
This check in is used by my students when they have something they want to tell me but might not have time/they don't want to in person. This one is displayed in class all year round for students to use when they need to.

 Weekend Reflection Check in
Quite often on a Monday we don't have lots of time for sharing or news. So I use this check in when I know we will have a busy day. It also gives me a gauge on what my students did over the weekend so I can tap into that if I can.

Google Slides are a great way to create and build your own templates for students or your classroom. Google Slides has many easy to use tools that can be used to develop and build a template for activities, learning, worksheets and follow ups. They could then be pushed out or exported to apps like Seesaw or Google Classroom for students to complete to show their learning.

How do you create your own template?

This video shows you how to use the tools like shapes and text boxes to create a simple template on Google Slides.

This talks through the process, shows you how to do it and previews a few other templates I have available also.

5 slide deck templates you can use in your classroom

Find 5 Google Slide deck templates that you can use in your classroom. These are all free to access, make a copy of and use in your classroom! Something for everyone!
1. Seesaw activity templates

This has more than 750 templates that can be downloaded, exported, shared and used by teachers and students from various year levels! This is a giant resource for you to use!
Access the templates here!

2. Main ideas template
This template is great for students to share their main ideas in response to a text. This was the template I created in the above video.

Morning routines are a huge part of setting up my classroom and day for success. There are a few things I do to engage with students, share our daily tasks and keep everyone updated. Last year I created this easy to use Google Slides template that has some exciting aspects to it, airplayed onto my classroom TV.
On my templates I have:
-the date
-a GIF
-a Bitmoji picture of myself
-some notes about the day
-a link to our check in QR code

You can create your own copy of this template and use it in your classroom! So easy to use, simply duplicate it for each day, change the information and you're good to go.

Let's practice our target words (ebooks)

My most recent resource are these two great ebook packs! Both of these packs follow the colour wheel targeting key high frequency words for that colour of books. This resource has an ebook, word card task card and Seesaw activity links; all to help reinforce the learning of key high frequency words! The first one targets words from magenta and red; with the second targeting words from yellow.
Picture
How does it work?
Students follow along the ebook as it focuses on key target words in that book. The first one targets key words from magenta and red.
There is a video showing students how to write the word, a video recording on how the word sounds, a space for students to draw over the letters with their finger, and an activity to see how many of the words there are on the page.
This pack also comes with a task card for each word that students can use alongside the ebook. Students should listen to the word, say the word out loud, write the word in the air with their finger or trace around the word formation on their device screen; plus create the word at the end. There are some activity ideas for how to create the word like playdough, magnets, stamps, sand trays and links to Seesaw activities.

These ebooks will available for download free on itunes apple books! Until then, you can access the ebook links free here.

Or download the whole resource which includes the ebook, word task cards and Seesaw activity links!

This weeks Sunday Spotlight is sharing this great word of the week template that allows students to show their learning in different ways. This could be used for whole class activities, small groups or as individual work. It has spaces for the word in the yellow bubble; write it in a sentence, how many letters, what rhymes with it, write it as a rainbow word, vowels and consonants, and as a silly sentence.

This is a freebie download that you can access anytime! I have this in our spelling/word of the week modelling book for students to refer to and use in their learning.

This weeks Sunday spotlight is sharing a new freebie I created for my classroom - post it note goals! Perfect for any year level with students using post it notes to document their goals. There are three boxes for goals which could be anything students are wanting to work on (curriculum level, behaviour, outside the class). Students write their goal on a post it note and stick it on their goal card. Once they have completed their goal students can take off the post it note and add a new one. Great for reusing the template also as the goal card can stay on the wall all term/year.
This is a freebie you can download from the VIP access section of my website - along with loads of other freebies I have created for teachers!

Reflection of ulearn 19

10/11/2019

Picture
This week I was lucky to attend the Ulearn19 conference at Rotorua, New Zealand. It was an action packed three days of meeting new people, learning new ideas and gather information/resources to bring back to my school and other teachers. I was also fortunate to be able to present two workshops as well which I will share the links again for today. This website post shares some of the key ideas and takeaways from the sessions I attended.

21st century skills that should be taught in the classroom
As education is changing, we need to prepare students for jobs that are do not currently exist or are being implemented slowly. This means helping our students build key skills to take them into the 21st century and be successful,.
Picture

Future of learning
This amazing infographic is a great way of showing the future of learning. This encompasses key ideas around technology 4 learning, research 4 learning, environment 4 learning and assessment 4 learning. Click on the picture for the link.

Student Agency through Inquiry
This session was hands down the best I have been to. A fantastic insight into inquiry, how students can become leaders and change makers of their learning; and bringing in provocation/exploration time to really explore learning opportunities for themselves. Click on the picture for the link to the presentation.
Picture

“Utilising technology to create change” - Building student capabilities in writing and reading
This session was a fabulous session around using Apple products and keynote to engage students in their learning and create purposeful end products. Jo Weldon shared some amazing examples from her classroom so click on the picture for the link to her presentation (this will take you to a google link to her keynote presentation).

Augmented Reality
Augmented reality or AR is a new, engaging way of bringing new possibilities into the classroom. Apple leaders shared key AR examples of how teachers can introduce these ideas into the classroom in meaningful ways - along with templates and lesson examples (like this one attached).
This example explained how you can use AR Makr to bring real world examples into the classroom.

Check out the lesson card templates here. Or search the collection of AR apps on the app store.

Play based learning
Play is important for many reasons, being incorporated and used in founding ways in the classroom. Some key skills that can be developed through a play based learning approach are:
-Managing information

-Work with others

-Be creative

-Self-manage

-Thinking, solve problems and make decisions.

A play based learning approach is a great way to get students to engage learners on a deeper level.

Digital Badging
I went to an amazing lunch time session from a friend Michael Davidson who shared his knowledge of setting up digital badging for his school. Digital badges are a great way for students and teachers to gain awards for work they do. Check out his link via the picture on how it works and can get set up.

Seesaw
I presented two presentations on Seesaw within the classroom. The first one was using seesaw portfolios for assessment with aspects like seesaw skills, activities and fluency checks. The second was using seesaw within literacy and maths - providing teachers with links, templates and ideas on how to create activities around literacy and maths. Click on the photos below for links to the presentations.

Arabella's adventures

10/9/2019

Picture
Arabella's Adventures is my Google Innovator project that came about this year. I designed (and published) the first of a technology themed picture book series; aimed at targeting key digital ideas with junior students. I really wanted to find a way to help increase awareness and skills with junior students, as quite often teachers are so busy with the core skills, safe digital practices are either left out, or taught in a limited capacity. So Arabella's Adventures was formed!
Arabella's Adventures is named after my daughter Arabella; and follows her journey at school learning key technology ideas. The first being about how to take care of devices.

This book comes in not only hard copy picture book; but also ebook, ibook and an interactive book creator version which has Arabella reading the book to you with supporting videos. There are also follow up activities to further support the learning from the book.

MRs Priestley ICT Online courses

10/7/2019

Picture
This year I have been working with teachers in my school to up skill them around digital competency and fluency in all areas. This is also my scope for my Masters project which I am currently studying (due to finish June, 2020).
As part of up skilling teachers, some feedback was around a crash course, or online lessons that they could follow to build key skills around Google Apps. There are already lots out there (some are paid/free) and it really is about making one that best fits your needs. So I have put together the beginning of Mrs Priestley ICT online courses - a place where you can access a targeted learning around key digital themes.
The first course is around Google Drive for Teachers. Unpacking all the navigation parts and where to find things. This course is free to complete, takes about 30 minutes and has walk through videos, text and quizzes to help you learn about Google Drive. At the end you can also download a copy of the certificate and digital badge to show your completion.
Picture
With more courses to come, I hope that this is another avenue teachers can take to learn. As always, this is always my take and interpretation of the learning and I am no way an expert. If I can help one teacher learn something new from my courses then I am happy!
