With the changes to how students read, parents are needing to think about the support they provide at home. No longer do we say look at the picture and make a guess; or try the word - what do you think? Structured literacy has given us the tools to help students decode the words by thinking about the sounds, segmenting the sounds, blending them together and then saying the word.

This helpful poster is perfect for parents or even for in the classroom to remind students about how they can decode the word. No more guessing!

Seesaw parent and student cheat sheets

4/16/2020

There is nothing harder than helping parents and students use Seesaw without being around to actually help them. It is already hard enough doing online learning, but sometimes technology makes it even more difficult!
These cheat sheets were designed to help target key questions that parents and students have when using Seesaw. How to sign up, how to interact and how to navigate. For students it shows how to post to their journal too. Great to share with parents who might need a visual guide to help them navigate this new learning. Preview the sheets below and grab a copy on the link below.

This week I did a facebook live video and there were lots of questions about software, apps and things for home learning. A few questions in particular were around Google calendar and appointments, so I created these two quick videos to help with those.

As schools may be closing and teachers preparing things just in case they close, I have created this quick activity sheet sharing 16 ideas students can do at home. You might see lots of these floating around, but this is another one you could share, print off or use with your families.

All these activities are at home based, easy, creative and gets students moving. There is also some template activities that parents could print to show their learning or evidence.

Home learning timetable

If your children are anything like mine then you will need to have a home learning timetable in place over this lockdown/home learning period. What better way than creating one together!

This template can be customised to have your own ideas, timing and timetable for your students. Simply make a copy of this timetable and add in what you need. Print it out or have it available for students to see and use. You could even add it to Google Keep or set reminders/alarms on Google calendar for your children to move to their next home learning session.

Teachers could use this template to help keep on track over the home learning period also - if you're looking to help stay on task!

With school being closed across the world, Seesaw is a great way of engaging with students and parents. Seesaw has updated to include home learning codes - a way to have students use their already created Seesaw classes from home. They can upload evidence and complete work from home and share it with their teacher! You can comment and interact with your students like usual in this huge time of change.
Check out this quick video below on how to access and download those home learning codes.

Seesaw for parents

Today I ran an after school workshop on Seesaw for parents. I have rolled it out with parents this week and wanted to ensure parents had enough knowledge and understanding to navigate the app, and know the purpose of it for us in the classroom.
This was a quick half an hour session talking through key things parents will need to know:
  • purpose
  • how it works
  • how to access it
  • commenting and their interaction
  • questions
Many of my parents in class signed up last night (once I sent the QR sign ups home) and spoke about how great it was to see into the classroom and what we are doing. My main aim at the moment is to increase parent engagement and communication with what we are doing in class and use Seesaw to share our learning with family members.

Spelling ideas for Parents

Some of my parents were asking for ways to help them with their child's spelling at home. I had previously made a video sharing some quick spelling tips for parents before; but found that some of my new parents didn't have access to Youtube.

So I created this quick pdf handout for parents that shares 7 quick ways they can practice spelling at home with their children. Some of these include:
-practicing out loud
-writing them on a piece of paper
-writing them in sentences
-writing them in alternate colours
Download a copy of the parent handout below or check out the youtube video for some more ideas.

parent help videos - spelling and word rings

12/31/2018

An area of my ICT leadership involves me looking at the community and ways that I can help meet the needs of parents. We use spelling words in a book and word rings in Year 0-2 and find that as we have many ELL (english language learner) parents we, as a school, need to think of ways to share ideas and information with them. The language barrier can be quite significant and make it hard for students to practice work at home if parents are not sure what to do.
I created these help videos on youtube to show parents easy activities that their children can do at home with their support. One video is on using their spelling words at home and the other on using their word rings. Have a look and share these with the parents in your class if you feel they are beneficial!
