My vegetable garden maths craft

9/23/2020

We have been learning about the garden and growing our own vegetables this week. To continue this into maths and art, we created our own maths vegetable gardens with matching number sentences. My kiddies loved it and I loved seeing their excitement to make their own vegetable items. This was relatively straight forward to make but I will document the instructions below so you can recreate your own one with your class!

You will need:
  • coloured paper for the vegetables
  • black or brown paper for the garden
  • number sentence slip
  • glue and scissors
Picture

Picture
1. Take your A3 black paper and fold it in half. Fold it again to about 3/4 width, and then again doing the same thing. It will create two little rows that can be used as the vegetable rows to place the vegetables. I then staple each side in two places to hold the garden base together.
Picture
Picture
2. Use the coloured paper to create your vegetables. These could be children's favourite ones, a mixture of vegetables grown under and on top of the ground and more. My students drew their vegetables first to help with cutting and then glued the top tufts of greenery on.
Picture
3. Complete the matching number sentence if your maths is addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. Students fill in their numbers or can make their own number sentences to match.
Picture
4. Put it together on a backing piece of paper! Hang it somewhere for students to see.
There we go! Super cute but fun and linking into the learning you might be doing about the garden and vegetables. Download my freebie vegetable garden number sentence slips below to use to guide this activity!

Word of the week differentiation

9/7/2020

A few weeks ago I shared a word of the week differentiation template that I made for my class. A way for students to choose the word they want to focus on, but with a progression of levels so they feel challenged. Teaching multiple levels is hard so this is a way to try target students via different words!
Picture

This is a new word of the week activity that aligns with the class chart above. Three different words that students can choose from depending on their levels, and they can respond based on their selected word. A place for students to write, circle, colour, write without vowels, write with rainbow letters and answer how many letters.

You'll find 5 templates in this bundle freebie for you to trial with your students.
Download both of these below! Free for you - my amazing educators!

Writing success criteria (model and slips)

7/23/2020

This week I have shared more of what I do in my writing programme. This is something I have showed before on my Instagram account, but never really a template or specifically on how I use it.
So today I have finally shared the template and success criteria slip I use in class for you all!

How does it work?
I use the backing model example and star setting in my whole class writing session. This has a space for a shared model with my students and then a space for constructing different star criteria. The difference being each star is an extension on the next idea to promote growth and goal setting in your class. My students always aim high and want to try achieve 3 stars. Some of course don't but you know they get a star or two for their effort. These stars are set altogether so everyone can achieve and know what is being expected of students in class.
Picture
Students then get a copy of the exact same whole class 3 star slip for their work. This will be attached to their evidence or work done, and be highlighted or annotated to show how they achieved it. There is a space for teacher comment too. These are exact copies of the whole class ones being created so there is consistency and opportunities for reflection and further learning.
These templates I have made are fully editable so find the link below, make a copy and then you will be able to edit them and use them in your classroom!

This freebie of the week is my new resource 'let's go shopping'. A great resource to use along side the little shop toys from New World, or with other shop toys you might have. Of course you don't need to have those either, and can use counters, beans or other objects in your classroom.
This resource has three versions:
-set making to 10/20
-addition to 10/20
-subtraction to 10/20
Picture
The great part about this resource is the number sentence strips that come with it too. Students can then write down their problems and answers to make sure they have solved it correctly. A great part to share the learning. Download it free for a limited time at the bottom of this post!

Let's go shopping

NZ$4.00
