Money in the classroom

Money is always a fabulous fun concept to teach, with so many resources out there to make it happen! Last year, I developed my own money pack (in NZ$) for my students and others across the country. Full of interactive games, activities and resources to implement concepts about money.

Today I started the beginning of this unit pack again, using some of the initial activities to implement key money concepts. My students had lots of fun and were able to interact with money in a way they hadn't before. Lots of my students didn't even know all the coins!!
This resource below is what I used to teach from. It has a variety of games and activities that students can use in whole class, group or individual work to learn key money concepts. The one pictured above I used as a whole class buddy activity, where they needed to find the buddy in the room that had the matching coin.
There is also a preview of another activity in the pack that I used in a lesson also.

I have a few different money resources available on my Teachers Pay Teachers store so have a look at it if you think it might be something you are after. Lots of fun, opportunities to learn and be engaged in the concept of maths.

Each activity is attached in the pdf, being crowdsourced from Teachers Pay Teachers. Links to the individual activities are provided in the pdf too.

Epic! is a fabulous app that students can use in the classroom. It is basically a giant online library of books that students have access to across the world for free. There are fiction, non-fiction, read to's, chapters and more. Lots of range, lots of topics and even quizzes that test your students after they have read the book.
Epic! has a great programme for teachers called Master Teachers. It is where you can apply to be part of an elite group of teachers that are passionate, competent and excited about using it in the classroom.

I was fortunate to be selected for this programme this year and received this amazing pack in the mail! I can't wait to wear my t-shirt in class for my students.

The great thing about epic! is you can log in as an educator and see what your students have been reading. It shows you how many books your students have finished, how many hours read and videos watched. You are able to click on the book each student read and see how many pages they flipped through and how far they read! Great stats if you are wanting more information on their independent work.
The limit is endless with the online library epic! has. So many books to choose from to link into your topic studies. Or just to choose from as free choice! Visit the website, get set up and use epic! in your classroom today!

This sunday spotlight shares the link to these great QR stories with audio links for the ready to read books in New Zealand. A great resource to use in 'listen to reading' time if you are do daily 5 in the classroom. Or just a great independent activity to have going for students to listen to stories. Even better if they can read along with the text version handy.
Each slide in this resource has a picture of the book, a link to a QR audio version of the book and also the embedded audio version of the text. Simply click on the sound icon and the audio version of the book will start playing.

Google slides has added a new update - audio! You can now add audio files directly into your slide presentations. No more finding links, using QR codes, or uploading to youtube and then inserting! Simply use these straight from your Google drive! Easy to use and know when you have them on the slide, there will be a little speaker icon showing you where the file is.
Here is an example of what it looks like! You can see it shows a speaker where the audio file is. This can be moved around your slide and just clicked to play.
Simply go insert >> audio and then choose the files you want to add in.

Happy grams

Happy grams!!! A quick and cute note for parents on how the day has gone. With so many things that go on during the day, it can be hard to make contact with parents to let them know about the amazing things their child might have done! Could be around attitude, perseverance, assessment or just a general awesome day!

How does the happy gram work?
You write the name of the student, tick wheat they did today that was amazing and send it home with the student. Sometimes if the student has done something that isn't listed, I will just write it on the back. I also like to elaborate sometimes with more information on the back too!

This could be used in so many ways and to cover various times of the day! Download your own copy of the happy gram to use in your classroom.

Bitmoji is just one of those things I have to use in the classroom! I love incorporating Bitmoji into my class resources, on the wall or in things I am presenting! It is free, easy to use and just lots of fun!

There is many ways you can use Bitmoji in the classroom or in your resources - with lots of templates, resources and pre-made examples you can go off. I have many free resources that you can use as templates in your classroom - ones I have personally used in my classroom on a daily basis. Check out these two of my favourites!
Interruption Poster
My students love this poster as they commonly look at it before coming to see me when I am busy. This sits on the wall behind me as a reminder prompt of when is it OK to interrupt me. I must say that I have not had many interruptions if they know it isn't on the list.

How can I help you mini poster
This Bitmoji template sits on my teaching table in a little double sided frame. I use it alongside the above poster to prompt when students are able to come and ask me questions, and when not to disturb me. This is a life saver - especially in testing!

Exit slips and feedback in the classroom

11/3/2019

Picture
Exit slips and feedback are a great way for students to reflect on their learning and think about what they can do for their next steps. This can be done individually, with a buddy or with the teacher. I talk about using exit slips and feedback slips a lot on my website and within the classroom. This is something that I believe works and helps students gain student agency over their learning and next steps.
These slips that I use are predominately used in writing time whilst we are working on our drafts. This feedback helps give us some ideas on what we need to work on with the 'two stars and a wish' approach.
You can of course use these in any curriculum area and with any purpose. Reflecting and giving feedback is an integral part of student learning so should not be missed out.
Picture
There are many different ways you can provide feedback or complete this in your classroom. But these feedback and exit slip make it easy for you to do. This bundle pack is currently on sale on my website so if you see a place for this in your classroom - grab it today! Easy to implement and this pack also has my other feedback prompts that I have talked about here in this website post too.

Sunday spotlight

This sunday spotlight is sharing this quick, easy template I made to help my students when they come back to class. Quite often I have students out of class doing lessons with learning assistants and they always come back into class AFTER you have talked through the class activity or guidelines. So instead of having them sit there and wait for me, we talked through a class set of expectations along with this 'check in with me' card.
First we brainstormed some idea of things we could do when they come back in. I want to foster independent practice of students problem solving or using strategies for themselves, but I also love them to help each other too. We broke it up into two categories: when I (the teacher) am free and when I (the teacher) am busy.
Picture
Alongside the above brainstorm, I created this cards which are on the wall with velcro dots. Students come back to class, choose a strategy to help them and if they still can't understand what we are doing - or are just looking for affirmation that they have done the right thing; they write their name on this card and leave it on my table near me.
When they give me this card, they don't need to talk to me but just see that I have seen it. I then know I need to make a chance to check in with them so they know what to do and are on task.
Picture
This template was easy to make - just textboxes and a bitmoji made on google drawings. You can make a copy of my template and edit it to your own face here.

Such an easy thing to put in place in your classroom and help your students out!
