Ball pit word game

5/13/2022

A lot of my students have low high frequency word recall and need lots of opportunities to practice/ recognise/ write/ say their high frequency words or tricky words. I recently saw an activity similar to this where students use words in ball pit but practice them or complete them in different ways.
Picture
So I went to the shops and grabbed some different types of balls to go in my ball pit - being a plastic container box.  How does it work?
Students use the recording sheet alongside the box and can play either by themselves or with a buddy. They take turns picking out a ball, saying the word that is on it and then writing it down on the recording sheet. Students would leave that ball they picked out of the box so students can pick it again.

Another way they could play is with the buddy, once they have picked out the balls to swap recording sheets. Students could then ask each other how to spell a word that was picked out!

Lots of great fun using this resource and I can't wait to get this going in word work time!

Planning tips for teachers

4/24/2022

On Instagram this week there has been lots of questions about planning! How to best plan, how to plan in general, ways to streamline.
So late last night when I was up for Ephron teething I mapped out this 'how to plan' tip sheet for teachers to use to help with planning!

Every school and teacher plans differently so keep that in mind when reading this! It is always very confronting sharing how you do things and people tend to always look for negatives.
This is how I work; this is what works for me.

I always spend a long time in the holidays creating really decent long term plans so that my planning throughout the term doesn't become tiresome or tricky.

Check out my planning tip sheet below! Plus links to all the resources that I use for planning!

Letter reversals p and q

4/10/2022

Do your students get confused between p and q and which why they face?

This is the second letter reversal anchor chart I have created to help with letters that are commonly reversed or written backwards. So I made this letter reversal resource that you can use in your classroom too.

The p starts with a pencil - so the hanging stick first and then the q starts with a queen - so the circle part first.

b and d letter reversal

Do your students get confused between b and d and which why they face?

I had this resource requested by a teacher to have a bat and donut - things that match in with her students interests. So I made this letter reversal resource that you can use in your classroom too.

The b starts with a bat - so the tall stick first and then the d starts with a donut - so the circle part first.

Structured literacy sequence freebie

2/23/2022

Picture
If you are new to structured literacy, you might need a reminder of the sequence in your lessons. There can be a lot; and at times it might seem overwhelming! But this helpful sequence might help you. I did not create this - thanks to the amazing Kirsten Main (RTLB) who put this together as her take. I just made it look pretty - her one is much more comprehensive so this one works well for me.

Of course in a lesson I wouldn't do all of it. I always start my lesson with the same things - usually the top five of this sequence and then chop and change between the bottom ones. I like to keep things interesting so kiddies don't get bored.

To help with animal reporting or informative reports, I put together this simple long term plan for anyone looking to get this going in their programme this term. It includes a long term plan, resources, links and more to help provide similar things to what I am doing this term!
Picture
Of course everyone plans differently. But when you are new to the profession or new to a genre it can be hard to wrap your head around what to do. Enter an easy to follow LTP that has ideas to help build basic knowledge of an animal report. All of these are ideas I have trialled, used and made apart of my programme when completing an animal report; or informative report. The freebies are in a Google Folder that can be downloaded and used to support this LTP. Full animal or insect templates plus New Zealand related animals can be purchased from my full resource - see below!

Animal report anchor chart Freebie

Im starting animal reports this term with my kiddies. This will be a combination of New Zealand animals and insects; moving onto dinosaurs later in the term; with students then applying their learning to create their own imaginary animal or report on their own.

For each genre or topic I study, I create and use anchor charts to help display key ideas, notions or important elements with my students. This makes it more real, relevant and relatable for applying the learning.

A big part of our 'read to self' and 'read to someone' this year was looking at the ways we can read a book. Students were very aware that they might not be able to read the words, leaving them feeling sad and uninterested in reading.
So we spent ALOT of talking about how you can read the pictures to help you make a guess or inference about what the story might be about. This freebie anchor chart might help you and your students remember how they can also read books when completing read to self or read to someone.
