How to make slime

4/12/2022

Last week I shared a snippet of some slime I did with my class and lots of you asked for the recipe. It was lots of fun and super easy to make.

The main ingredients used were white glue, baking soda, shaving cream, food colouring, foam soap and contact solution. I had two students with me at a time making their slime and it took about 5 minutes per group.

Guess the number?

4/6/2022

This week I brought back a class favourite - guess the number! A great game for students to practice place value concepts but also a great guessing game! We play in as a whole class and have students be the 'master' where they think of the number and then choose students to make guesses. Any wrong guesses are placed in the bottom so you can see what numbers have been used already; and then once the right number is chosen it is added to the box.

This game is lots of fun and the kids are always obsessed with guessing the right number! Lots of fun competitiveness.

b and d letter reversal

4/2/2022

Do your students get confused between b and d and which why they face?

I had this resource requested by a teacher to have a bat and donut - things that match in with her students interests. So I made this letter reversal resource that you can use in your classroom too.

The b starts with a bat - so the tall stick first and then the d starts with a donut - so the circle part first.

Both of these resources are available on my website or you can download this freebie below to get started in your classroom.

So many people have asked how I made this organisation fridge magnet which I shared over Instagram this weekend. One of our school values is 'be prepared' and I wanted to try help my kiddies achieve success in this area. So I made this table, added in some pictures off Google, printed and laminated then added a magnet.
This can be added to their home fridge or blue tacked on their door or in their room! Something easy to create but effective in its purpose!

Find the table template below to add in your own pictures - simply upload it to google slides or powerpoint then add on your chosen images and text!

Stage 1-5 Google forms

Picture
In 2020 over lockdown, I wanted to find a way to keep my kiddies engaged but also focused on their maths. With the way things were, I didn't want to put pressure on families either. So i created these google forms that match up to number strategies within Stage 1-5 of the New Zealand curriculum within Maths. Each google form has 10 questions linked to the strategy, and provides a score and answers they got incorrect. These can be used in lots of different ways in the classroom - as an activity, buddy activity, summative assessment, exit slip, hot spot and more!
All of these are available for free to use. They aren't editable but are a great activity to include in your classroom. I recently updated these to have them as QR codes for littles who might not be able to type in a bit.ly URL. You can download those free below.

Sound it out to Space

NZ$4.00

Sound it out to Space

This activity is a great alternative to phoneme box sounding out. It is fun, engaging and hands on with kiddies being able to map out each sound before blending them together. With a space theme, this has phoneme stars with a space background and uses a spaceship/rocket as the moving piece.

How does it work?

Kiddies use the phoneme star mat and spaceship. Kiddies use words they have provided by their teacher, and move the spaceship each phoneme star whilst saying it out loud. Then once they get to the blend it star, they blend the sounds together to say the word. For reinforcement, kiddies can then write it down on the recording sheet.

This resource includes 4 different variation mats for 3/4/5 phoneme words.

This resource includes 21 pages.

**It does not include words - teachers are able to use/provide the word lists that best match their kiddies learning and needs.

Types of Play in your classroom

7/19/2021

My play in the classroom has definitely been through drastic changes over the last two years. Trailing things, making new classroom resources, looking into best practice and making contact with teachers across New Zealand on what they do.
In getting set up with play in your classroom, its always good to check in and see what type of play your students might be engaging with.
Picture
This can be easier said than done as students quite often chop and change in their play during their play. For example, while observing two students play last term, these two started off as parallel play. They were playing with the car toys parallel to each other; with no engagement or interaction with each other. One student then went off to play with the dinosaurs (solitary play) and the other student simply was an onlooker - watched them play but didn't join in. Then one of these students got out the magnetics and they both were then engaged in cooperative play. Students can switch and change where they need to and for the play that benefits them.

Its definitely something to think about...
What type of play are your students engaging with?
What type of activities promote which type of play in your classroom?
Can you easily spot students that are unoccupied or as an onlooker in play?
What could you do for them?

Dinosaur QR code fact file posters

6/9/2021

This term my kiddies are learning all about dinosaurs! We have started a collection of fact file QR code posters to help us continue to learn both with me in our class inquiry time; or also in our independent time on devices.
I love using QR codes to help students connect to videos or websites easily to access information. I have shared lots about QR codes before and value their use in the classroom immensely!

In this fact file poster pack there are six posters students can use to access and learning information. These could be displayed on a wall chart, poster file display, or interactive resource for student use. These are free to download and use!
