Code a story

A few years ago my friend Michael created these lessons on how to code a Scratch story. I took his lessons and used these in my CRT lessons for digital technology; incorporating English (writing and reading) and Technology (computational thinking). My kids had lots of fun creating their stories and exploring the coding blocks in the creation.
I was asked recently about some resources that I knew of that could be used to unpack digital technologies in the classroom and remembered this fun lesson! It took a good three-four weeks to teach, as it was broken down into smaller chunks; like you would when you wrote a story. I managed to stumble upon the slides I created for the lessons; making sure I modelled how to do it for the students also in my lessons.
We used a storyboard planner to plan our stories, I taught my classes the blocks needed in the modelling sessions and then we put the series of lessons together to have a story completed! Lots of fun, and the students loved it!

Decodable reading

10/21/2020

Picture
Decodable reading is all the rave at the moment. The benefits of being able to decode while reading, using texts that can be decoded easily. There are lots of brands of decodable texts: little learners love literacy, letters and sounds, whizz kids. It depends on your phonics or literacy programme, costs and interests to which brand of books you could use. Each of these are amazing and help students read using a decoding approach with target sounds.

This is a teaching sequence outline anchor chart which I developed to help share how it can be taught or covered in a lesson. This is no way a 'be all or end all' approach; but covers the main points when teaching.
1. Prior to reading - the first thing is making sure you have selected the appropriate text based on the sound or grapheme you are focusing on.
2. Segmenting and blending - this is focusing on the words in the text. Practicing segmenting them out and blending them together. This is practiced continuously to build confidence and skill with the sound.
3. Tricky words - reading the tricky words as 'fast words'. Lots of reading over them and practicing these so when they are recognised in the text students can say them quickly.
4. After reading - just like every other guided reading session; talk about the text and have students respond to what was covered.

Guided maths - the teaching sequence

10/18/2020

How do you teach guided maths?
Of course there is no right or wrong answer. Every teacher does things differently but this is what works for me. I have a new learning assistant starting on Monday and I had to really think about how I teach guided maths. I wanted it to be explicit and clear so that she was confident in the teaching she would be able to do in maths time.
With learning assistants, they are not teachers or should be doing things like a teacher does. But if they have clear pathway to what it can look like then it will help ease the process.
Picture
This is teaching anchor chart is handy for teachers, new teachers, learning assistants and more! So that guided maths is clear and learning is being explored in the same capacity. You can use this in your classroom, share it with your beginning teachers or just use it to spice up your programme!

How have I set up playful learning in my classroom?

10/14/2020

A question I have been asked lots recently is how I have playful learning (play or play based however you call it) is run in my classroom. I have a range of ideas to have it set up which works for me, my students and my classroom.
We call it playful learning - taking our own take on what we think it is. Find out more information below on all the things I have set up in my classroom to support this!

Picture
This is a target display with information on our school PB4L target, key competencies target and playful learning target. These are what I am observing or talking about in class time. Each day I talk through these targets and remind students of key behaviour, talking or actions that could come under those targets.
Picture
This playful learning observation template is what I record my observations on. These are for each individual student and I aim for 4-6 students a week. My observations are linked to the target behaviours, but also an explicit way to document the play that I can see. I then use this to support my learning stories and assessment of each child.
download it here
Picture
Playful learning provocations is a list of some ideas for each four themed provocation ideas. These are grouped into four areas with ideas on what you can do to support this type of play in your classroom.
grab this template here
Picture
Learning stories are a great way for parents to see and reflect on the learning that is happening in class. These are written from my observation templates are communicate goals or targeted skills.

This template is free to download and use in your classroom.

Storage for provocations can be quite tricky. I don't have a lot of space so try to reuse/keep things in a handy place. I have four cubby holes where I keep my provocations and play learning activities. These are quick to grab in their containers and things so that when I change my provocations I can just grab what I need. Organised chaos is the way to go.
All my reusable provocation signs and things like play dough mats, writing prompts, and laminated activities are in the pink binder files.
I also have a large container tub for my larger dramatic play provocations which is hidden out the back of my classroom.
Picture
Picture
I make a conscious effort to plan for playful learning in my classroom. Here i document what I am working on with key competencies, te whariki principles and school values. I write down what provocations I am using and then who I am observing as well over the week.

See a range of provocations and playful aspects from my classroom this year.

Learning stories template

Picture
Learning stories are a great way to document play, learning and the exploration of things students are doing in class. I have been creating individualised learning stories this year to be explicit about learning that is happening and link it into aspects that I am covering. I then share these on Seesaw for parents to see, in an ongoing way to build an insight into the classroom. I love creating these and always make a point of talking about them with the students too.
Love this template? Make a copy of it below so you can use it in your classroom too!

Last night I shared a template on Instagram of how I am sharing the targets each week with my students. This is an overview template that I have near our school values and things like that. Each Monday I will be taking time to unpack these targets with a mini anchor chart unpacking each of these. The school values targets link to my school PB4L learning, and I really wanted to work on talking more about key competencies and playful learning too.

Today I updated my Seesaw student and teacher progressions. These were created awhile ago to use as goals, progressions and a resource teachers and students can use when implementing Seesaw. It covers three different levels of progressions: beginner, proficient and advanced. There are five areas to the progressions:
  • tools
  • activities
  • feedback
  • posting
  • blog

These can be displayed in your class, used for formative assessment of students using Seesaw or to help teachers see how they are using it, to build to an advanced level of use.

Ulearn 2020 - Get sweet with Seesaw

10/7/2020

Picture
Today I presented at Ulearn2020. It was really different this year being a completely online course and I ran a presentation called 'Get Sweet with Seesaw'. It was an introductory session to Seesaw, unpacking four key ways that Seesaw can be used with students and in your classroom.
The four key themes were:
  • document the learning
  • create the learning
  • share the learning
  • reflect on the learning
Picture
Picture
It gave examples of what those themes meant for use with Seesaw, how it is represented in the classroom and then there was some play-exploration time for teachers to use the tools in practice. I find the best way to learn is via hands on learning opportunities and really value learning by using Seesaw.
If you would love access to my slides you can click on the link below! Otherwise any questions about what I shared please get in contact. I love Seesaw and really see the benefits for learning!
Yes! I would love to see the slides!

This weeks freebie of the week are my handy Seesaw cheat sheets! Something I have been continuing to add to based on needs, questions and learning from teachers and the new updates.
These are handy for new teachers to Seesaw, parents and students; with differing cheat sheets in this download. These are already available on my website and Google Drive, but in a variety of sets and places. So I have put them all together in one easy download! So far there are 20 in this bundle, with more coming based on needs!
