Over the holidays I will be running some online Zoom PLD to help share the skill and knowledge I have with Seesaw. I know we are all using our own different online platforms for home learning; but Seesaw has great opportunities to be used at home with learners. These session are all free to attend and have a slide deck free that you can use to guide your learning for afterwards. These are also recorded if you can't make the time or session planned.
Seesaw PLD #2
This will cover Seesaw activities and how to assign these to your class for students to complete.

This week I did a facebook live video and there were lots of questions about software, apps and things for home learning. A few questions in particular were around Google calendar and appointments, so I created these two quick videos to help with those.

As schools may be closing and teachers preparing things just in case they close, I have created this quick activity sheet sharing 16 ideas students can do at home. You might see lots of these floating around, but this is another one you could share, print off or use with your families.

All these activities are at home based, easy, creative and gets students moving. There is also some template activities that parents could print to show their learning or evidence.

Home learning timetable

If your children are anything like mine then you will need to have a home learning timetable in place over this lockdown/home learning period. What better way than creating one together!

This template can be customised to have your own ideas, timing and timetable for your students. Simply make a copy of this timetable and add in what you need. Print it out or have it available for students to see and use. You could even add it to Google Keep or set reminders/alarms on Google calendar for your children to move to their next home learning session.

Teachers could use this template to help keep on track over the home learning period also - if you're looking to help stay on task!

With school being closed across the world, Seesaw is a great way of engaging with students and parents. Seesaw has updated to include home learning codes - a way to have students use their already created Seesaw classes from home. They can upload evidence and complete work from home and share it with their teacher! You can comment and interact with your students like usual in this huge time of change.
Check out this quick video below on how to access and download those home learning codes.

Let's practice our target words (blue)

The third in the 'let's practice our target words' ebook is now live - targeting blue words (from the ready to read series and colour wheel). This book targets blue words with an interactive ebook that shows students how to form the word they are focusing on, opportunities to hear the word and then a formation of the word for students to trace with their finger, or make in the air.
This resource also comes with some resource task cards that can be used alongside the ebook. It prompts students to first listen to the word, then say the word, then write it in the air with an option to create it at the end. The overview task card shows students ways they can create the word.

This resource pack is available on my Teachers Pay Teachers Store. The ebook is available to download for free from apple books - but this does not include the task cards.

Teacher stamps

I posted a picture of my new trolley over the weekend and had lots of questions about what was actually on my trolley and the stamps I have. So here is a quick post sharing each of the stamps and how/what they are used for!

These stamps were sourced from these places:
The literacy place

2 stars and a wish
This stamp is great for giving feedback in writing time. This could be used in group time, with independent scaffolding, as editing tools or conferencing. It is great for students to think about two things that they did well and something they 'wish' to get better at.

Your next steps
This is a great further learning stamp that gives students their next steps in their work. It could be used in any curriculum area, with their next steps written next to it.
Self Check
This stamp is used in writing alongside the Sheena Cameron 'writing book'. This is used when students make checks or corrections tot their writing; and can be used as more of an accountability stamp to keep track of how many changes were made.

Traffic light stamp
This stamp is a great end of lesson/work finisher that I use alot in all my lessons. This is used in their work as a reflection tool (students tick the circle they feel relate to their work) and I use alongside self feedback. I have done lots of work with this stamp and created other resources that support the implementation of this stamp.
Super writer stamp
I use this stamp when students earn the 'super writer' of the day. This is where students writing meet a certain criteria and get to wear a super writers cape for the day for being super at writing. This is placed on the page of writing that was picked for the super writer.

Fun stamps
These stamps are all fun recognition stamps that I put on student work. This could be on any curriculum area and for any piece of work. I love these stamps because they are fun, different, better than just writing your name as a teacher. And what kids don't like a fun stamp!

Growth mindset stamp
I have yet to use this as it is my latest stamp in my collection. I plan on using this once we unpack our mindsets and key competencies more; and use it as a reflection tool for their work evidence. Stay tuned for more on this stamp!

Swat the word

I love a great word game/activity that increases student word knowledge and quick recall. I am always looking for new ways that engage students and this was definitley one of them. Last week I was scrolling on facebook and saw something similar happening in a classroom. I then created my own activity that my students could complete in class to practice this!
So how does it work? I set up my 'Swat the word' slide deck on the TV or activeboard to use in the lesson. I call out a word (or a different word for each student) and they come and swat the word. It could be doing a challenge also so in this video, crawling under the table to get to the word first. This could be turned into a friendly game or challenge; or with further challenges to make it more exciting or intense.

Last week I shared a preview of these writing slips I had made for my students. Teachers were going crazy for them and asked if there were more to come.

Well guess what? There is and the first release of the writing success criteria slips are now live on my Teachers Pay Teachers Store. This bundle includes 66 ready made slips that target different learning intentions from writing level 1B to 2B. These also cover both surface and deeper features of writing.
This bundle also includes a small goal template and self-reflection slip that can be used alongside the implementation of this resource. All of these are used in my classroom alongside writing progressions to target student needs and next learning steps. More information coming on how I run my writing programme also.

Seesaw for parents

Today I ran an after school workshop on Seesaw for parents. I have rolled it out with parents this week and wanted to ensure parents had enough knowledge and understanding to navigate the app, and know the purpose of it for us in the classroom.
This was a quick half an hour session talking through key things parents will need to know:
  • purpose
  • how it works
  • how to access it
  • commenting and their interaction
  • questions
Many of my parents in class signed up last night (once I sent the QR sign ups home) and spoke about how great it was to see into the classroom and what we are doing. My main aim at the moment is to increase parent engagement and communication with what we are doing in class and use Seesaw to share our learning with family members.

Signing up to Seesaw can be tricky sometimes with parents wanting to know lots about how to make it happen. Teachers are already busy people so I made this quick poster handout that you can give to parents to show them how to join.
Simple instructions with pictures and descriptors to make it explicit and easy to follow. Parents will be able to join via QR code printout successfully. Grab a copy of the handout pdf below.

This weeks Sunday Spotlight is sharing a new resource that is amazing in your maths sessions. Problem solving mats is a resource that I use all the time in my classroom to add my addition and subtraction or problem solving teaching. This resource includes the base problem solving mat that you use to add/subtract items from or to problem solve. Great for students working with materials or moving away to imaging.

In 10 fun themed mats, these can be used in lots of different way in your classroom - guided groups, hot spots, buddy work or individual solving. Lots of fun and a great scaffolding tool for your class.
Some of the mats are around insects, animals, food, children and more! Something to hook in all your learners.

Download your free copy here today or purchase it from my Teachers Pay Teachers Store. If your students love it please let me know!

I'm done! Now what?

Don't you hate it when your kids come to you and say "I'm done" without looking to choose something to do?
This resource is a great one for your classroom routine that provides some activities for students to choose from that they can do instead of asking me.

These activities have things for writing, read, drawing, creating, help or catching up. A little bit of everything for everyone and the popular ones for those students that want them. It is used everyday and a popular part of my classroom practice.
This resource is not customisable, but has have two blank picture squares for you to add your own if you want to. Definitley a great classroom resource!

2 digital tools for the classroom

I implemented two technology ideas in the classroom this week to start our regular use and incorporation of digital tools in the classroom. These are Kahoot! and Osmo. Both have great opportunities for students in the classroom and are to easy to get going in your rotations.
Kahoot! is a free quiz based software that can be designed into interactive experiences for students in the classroom. These can be used for multiple curriculum areas, with its ease of use being used by any year level - even new entrants with scaffolding!

Check it out here and see how it can work for you in your classroom; or check out these Kahoot! ideas here.

Osmo is an amazing manipulative digital tool that enhances learning opportunities with game pieces to support. We first started with maths numbers and used this to support our maths programme in class. Students could use this individually or in pairs and work on the learning with that.

The other tool was the coding app which teaches key computational thinking and skills with a hands on approach. This is always a hit and my kids loved using this one too.
Find out lots more information here on the Osmo website.

See it in action - Let's practice our target words

Not sure how to use the 'let's practice your target words' book? This video shows a quick snippet of how students can use the ebook to help learn key target words. It has parts for listening to the word, writing the word and word formation. This resource then comes with word activities to further support the learning of target words.
Along with book is a set of task cards and making prompts that students can use to further support learning their target words. The first prompt is a poster that I have on the wall prompting students to create the word using one of the items below. The second prompt is the mini task cards that I have on a ring that students can use to guide their motions on each target word.
