Calm down corner - why?

9/29/2020

I have been using a calm down corner for the last two years. Of course the name 'calm down corner' can mean that kids only use it to calm down. But that's not how I frame it or how my kids view it.
It's a place where students can go to think, relax, regulate emotions, have a break, use a strategy to get back in the green zone and more! A safe place, where students can go whenever they need to.

When I started looking into the zones of regulation a lot more, there was more and more evidence pointing towards areas like this in class. So I looked on insta and came across WholeHearted School Counseling resources.
Picture
Her resources are amazing - with bundles, activities, classroom displays and more to help unpack emotions, coping skills, mindfulness and more! If you are looking to get into any of this then her resources are where it is at!

I have also subscribed to Calm Space Collective - a termly subscription of fidgets, mindfulness and calming manipulatives that students can use in a space like this. I have a box of fidgets and things they can use as a strategy when in the calm down corner. There are other things like fluffy pillows and even a blanket that can be used too. I don't have a picture of my space but will update this post with one once I have taken one.

I also use these resources in my class to unpack the zones of regulation which I have tied into all of this learning. I use my zones lanyard help everyday when on duty and then the zones of regulation pack at the beginning of the journey into emotions and the zones.

Regulation lanyard help

Regulation lanyard help

This regulation freebie will provide a reminder for students and teachers to talk through their zone and emotions. There is a cover sheet, emotion explanation and then a card for each zone. These provide questions for teachers to scaffold the conversation and also some sentence starters for students to use when answering. Great for teacher on duty or just a visual reminder on a teacher lanyard.

For the same size as mine, I printed 6 to a page.

My vegetable garden maths craft

9/23/2020

We have been learning about the garden and growing our own vegetables this week. To continue this into maths and art, we created our own maths vegetable gardens with matching number sentences. My kiddies loved it and I loved seeing their excitement to make their own vegetable items. This was relatively straight forward to make but I will document the instructions below so you can recreate your own one with your class!

You will need:
  • coloured paper for the vegetables
  • black or brown paper for the garden
  • number sentence slip
  • glue and scissors

1. Take your A3 black paper and fold it in half. Fold it again to about 3/4 width, and then again doing the same thing. It will create two little rows that can be used as the vegetable rows to place the vegetables. I then staple each side in two places to hold the garden base together.

2. Use the coloured paper to create your vegetables. These could be children's favourite ones, a mixture of vegetables grown under and on top of the ground and more. My students drew their vegetables first to help with cutting and then glued the top tufts of greenery on.
Picture
3. Complete the matching number sentence if your maths is addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. Students fill in their numbers or can make their own number sentences to match.
Picture
4. Put it together on a backing piece of paper! Hang it somewhere for students to see.
There we go! Super cute but fun and linking into the learning you might be doing about the garden and vegetables. Download my freebie vegetable garden number sentence slips below to use to guide this activity!

Seesaw listen and write maths activities

9/14/2020

I love all the new updates that Seesaw is making to continue to meet the needs of our learners and our wants as teachers. The multiple recording tool now makes it easy to create interactive and multi-purpose activities for all year levels! This is a great way to gain a snapshot of what the students are thinking and see exactly what they are doing in their learning.
Picture
These listen and write maths activities allow students to first listen to the recording of me saying a number; then write it down in the space next to it. There are four pre-made ones that cover numbers to 10, 20, 100 and 1000. Students can listen as many times as they need to, to figure out the number.
These can be used for formative assessment, number hot spots, summative assessment or even fun maths activities!
Find the links to all four Seesaw activities for yourself on this link here!

Word of the week differentiation

9/7/2020

A few weeks ago I shared a word of the week differentiation template that I made for my class. A way for students to choose the word they want to focus on, but with a progression of levels so they feel challenged. Teaching multiple levels is hard so this is a way to try target students via different words!
Picture

This is a new word of the week activity that aligns with the class chart above. Three different words that students can choose from depending on their levels, and they can respond based on their selected word. A place for students to write, circle, colour, write without vowels, write with rainbow letters and answer how many letters.

You'll find 5 templates in this bundle freebie for you to trial with your students.
Download both of these below! Free for you - my amazing educators!

How do I do flipped learning?

9/5/2020

Picture
Flipped learning is a fun way of teaching students without having them at your table or group. Flipped learning involves flipping the learning opportunities with students first watching or interacting with the learning without the teacher, usually in an online way; and then interacting with the teacher after through activities or lessons.
Flipped learning is fun, engaging and using technology in a meangingful way.

I have been using flipped learning for the past three years, mainly with maths. Check out this video on how I use flipped learning and a walk through of my flipped learning site.
