1. Prior to reading - the first thing is making sure you have selected the appropriate text based on the sound or grapheme you are focusing on. 2. Segmenting and blending - this is focusing on the words in the text. Practicing segmenting them out and blending them together. This is practiced continuously to build confidence and skill with the sound. 3. Tricky words - reading the tricky words as 'fast words'. Lots of reading over them and practicing these so when they are recognised in the text students can say them quickly. 4. After reading - just like every other guided reading session; talk about the text and have students respond to what was covered.
This is teaching anchor chart is handy for teachers, new teachers, learning assistants and more! So that guided maths is clear and learning is being explored in the same capacity. You can use this in your classroom, share it with your beginning teachers or just use it to spice up your programme!
A question I have been asked lots recently is how I have playful learning (play or play based however you call it) is run in my classroom. I have a range of ideas to have it set up which works for me, my students and my classroom. We call it playful learning - taking our own take on what we think it is. Find out more information below on all the things I have set up in my classroom to support this!
I make a conscious effort to plan for playful learning in my classroom. Here i document what I am working on with key competencies, te whariki principles and school values. I write down what provocations I am using and then who I am observing as well over the week. See a range of provocations and playful aspects from my classroom this year.
Learning stories are a great way to document play, learning and the exploration of things students are doing in class. I have been creating individualised learning stories this year to be explicit about learning that is happening and link it into aspects that I am covering. I then share these on Seesaw for parents to see, in an ongoing way to build an insight into the classroom. I love creating these and always make a point of talking about them with the students too. Love this template? Make a copy of it below so you can use it in your classroom too!
Want to read more on playful learning? Search 'playful learning' or provocations in the search bar below to find my other blog posts and resources. Today I updated my Seesaw student and teacher progressions. These were created awhile ago to use as goals, progressions and a resource teachers and students can use when implementing Seesaw. It covers three different levels of progressions: beginner, proficient and advanced. There are five areas to the progressions:
These can be displayed in your class, used for formative assessment of students using Seesaw or to help teachers see how they are using it, to build to an advanced level of use. Grab these updated versions below!

Her resources are amazing - with bundles, activities, classroom displays and more to help unpack emotions, coping skills, mindfulness and more! If you are looking to get into any of this then her resources are where it is at! I have also subscribed to Calm Space Collective - a termly subscription of fidgets, mindfulness and calming manipulatives that students can use in a space like this. I have a box of fidgets and things they can use as a strategy when in the calm down corner. There are other things like fluffy pillows and even a blanket that can be used too. I don't have a picture of my space but will update this post with one once I have taken one. I also use these resources in my class to unpack the zones of regulation which I have tied into all of this learning. I use my zones lanyard help everyday when on duty and then the zones of regulation pack at the beginning of the journey into emotions and the zones. Regulation lanyard help

Regulation lanyard help This regulation freebie will provide a reminder for students and teachers to talk through their zone and emotions. There is a cover sheet, emotion explanation and then a card for each zone. These provide questions for teachers to scaffold the conversation and also some sentence starters for students to use when answering. Great for teacher on duty or just a visual reminder on a teacher lanyard. For the same size as mine, I printed 6 to a page.

Download both of these below! Free for you - my amazing educators!
Targeting all your students in class can be tricky - especially if you are covering a few years in one class like I do. I am more conscious of targeting students at all levels and are using a three level progression for my learning intentions and activities for students to aim at a level that works for them. Why do this? Well then all my students can be stressed, pushed and promoting their own further learning independently. I can guide them to what I think is a good progression for them. But ultimately it is setting them up for their own success!
This other resource which I created are these progressions for student and teachers to use - to move from a beginner level to an advanced level. Easy to follow and shows the user how they can improve each time. A great classroom prompt for your classroom. Download the pdfs below.
