This year I have made an active point to include play into my classroom. Teaching Year 0-3 students, it is part of our everyday learning to build on those key skills and learning opportunities. I have a few things in place that work towards this - sharing a few of these below in this post! Call it what you want, playful, play-based, learning through play is an amazing aspect to have in the classroom. Learning through play is a pedagogical approach where play is the valued mode of learning – where children can explore, experiment, discover, and solve problems in imaginative and playful ways. Learning through play is also called play-based learning. - NZ Curriculum TKI

With New Zealand going back into lockdown, many teachers are back to using distant or online learning to keep the learning happening. Part of the first lockdown we had here, I shared info on how to create your own sticker books and stickers for Seesaw and motivational rewards. These can be updated each day or based on the activities students complete and be a way of keeping students involved or interested in their learning. I have created a video below on how to find and access past Seesaw sticker books; with links to how to create your own sticker book using my template and sticker templates. This second video is of the amazing new update to Seesaw! You can now link directly to Seesaw activities for students to complete without having to go through the activity portal. Before it was hard to get students to complete activities online by simply talking about where to go, how to access it and using visuals as prompts. Now you don't need that - you can generate the student link and share it with them directly. They get taken straight to the activity to complete and then can fill it in! So easy and handy. Check out my video showing you how to do it! This weeks freebie of the week are these anchor charts to help students use a wide range of vocabulary instead of commonly used one! No more said, happy, long or slow! Spice up their lives with some new vocabulary instead of using those common words! This resource includes 21 commonly used words with replacement or other words they could use instead! Display this in your classroom on the wall, by group tables or as prompts for students to refer too! Exciting for new things in your classroom that can help students extend their ideas or make them more interesting! Download it below!
These provocation ideas are split into four categories - sensory, cognitive, pretend and fine motor. Each of these can be easily implemented in your classroom with what you have and the needs or interests of your students. Of course this is not a finite list, but something I am using to make sure I meet each of these play areas for my students. Download this list as pdf below, along with this other freebie of some pretend (dramatic) play ideas too!
Students then get a copy of the exact same whole class 3 star slip for their work. This will be attached to their evidence or work done, and be highlighted or annotated to show how they achieved it. There is a space for teacher comment too. These are exact copies of the whole class ones being created so there is consistency and opportunities for reflection and further learning.
These templates I have made are fully editable so find the link below, make a copy and then you will be able to edit them and use them in your classroom! To align with my assessment teacher book, I created an overall tracker online. This is made on Google sheets, for you to be able to make a copy of and use (as is) or edit to add your own information in. This can then be printed off and used in your classroom or folder; or as a digital online version. This is free so make a copy of it for yourself at the bottom! Discovery and explore charts are a great addition to your classroom. These can be used in lots of different ways whilst exploring a new topic, new wonderings, questions students might have or around a discovery or exploration table. These come with the headings 'discovery' and 'explore', and have different versions to suit students and ages. Some have a table to help keep ideas in seperate places, some free space, wonderings pages, question pages and KWL pages.
Ive been working hard these holidays to create resources that both you and your students will love!! Both freebies and paid resources, that can be implemented in your classroom once you return after the holidays. Check them out below! Exit Slips for my Stage 1-5 Maths Packs... Stage 1 Exit Slips

Quite often we listen to kidsbop - kids versions of popular songs that have been rerecorded without swear words or in appropriate versions for children. We also like to listen to originals, so I have searched and put together this youtube playlist of lyric versions you can play in class. These are videos of the songs with lyrics so could be used in singing time, learning time or for fun! Find the link to this playlist at the bottom to listen to the songs or add it to your own playlist for school.
I have used this template to help my students keep track of rotation times, to be on task and then have a tidy up reminder too - to stop the unnecessary pausing or fluffing around. Great for any year level, simply adapt it to add your own ideas!
Try three before me 💭 Part of our classroom practice is building student agency & strategies to help them problem solve before coming to the teacher. We’ve been experimenting with a few different ways & my kids have helped me come up with this! Try 3 before me! 1. Ask yourself - what do you think you might need to do? What could you try? 2. Look around - what are others doing? Is there something in the room that could help you eg instructions? 3. Ask a friend - ask someone for help or ask someone else after that if you still don’t know. A great thing to add to your classroom or bank of resources to help build student agency amongst themselves and/or across your students. Grab this freebie on the link here or by pdf download underneath.

End of day reflection time is a great way for students to talk through the day. Its a great time to reflect on the positives, goal set for the next day or just have conversations to debrief. I have done end of day reflection for years and my students find it a great way to hear from everyone. I also love hearing from students that might not have spoken or shared during the day. End of day reflection is a great thing to add into your daily classroom timetable - I allocate 5-10 minutes right before bell and it sets everyone up for a great afternoon! Have a try and let me know how you go! I have been asked a lot recently about how i run my writing programme so I created this video to share some main tips on what I have going on.
