student goal setting in writing

Does your students use goal setting to help monitor their progress and next learning steps?
My class use personalised goals to help track their next learning steps and promote further learning.

Each child has their own learning goal which is chosen after discussion with the teacher. We find gaps in their learning taken from our school writing progressions and write it down on a writing goal card. These are attached to their writing books so students can keep their goal in their minds while writing. Students then conference with the teacher after writing to see if they can find evidence of their goal in their work. If they do, they receive a sticker and after 5 stickers they can discuss a new goal with me.

There goals are also on a writing board so I can keep track of where they are and who is working on which goal. When I complete teacher conferences, I do my groupings on their goals and those skills they are working on. Each child has a little coloured version of their face on their goal so I can see who is where.

This is displayed near my teacher table and has picture cues (for child recognition) and also a key for when marking their books.

If you would like a free copy of my writing goal template, access that in my giant google drive folder. Alternatively, the click to make a copy is here >> Writing Goal Template
