Structured Maths Approach - a structured maths scope and sequence for teachers and students in Year 0-3.
A structured scope and sequence serves as the backbone of effective teaching and learning. It provides teachers with a clear roadmap, ensuring that each concept builds upon the foundation laid before it. By carefully sequencing mathematical topics and activities, we empower our young learners to gradually develop their skills and confidence. With a well-organized structure, teachers can create a supportive learning environment that allows students to thrive, leading to a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.
Split into four phases, giving a comprehensive unpacking for students in the classroom.
Phase two is best suited for Year 1 classrooms; or students on their mathematics learning journey with a foundational knowledge of numbers to 20 and addition to 10.
Phase Two covers four chunks of learning:
Chunk 1
Lesson 1: Number 1-100 (naming numbers, recognizing numbers)
Lesson 2: Teen and ty numbers
Lesson 3: FNWS to 100
Lesson 4: BNWS from 100
Lesson 5: Ordering numbers 1-100
Lesson 6: Comparing numbers
Lesson 7: Place value (composing and decomposing)
Lesson 8: Skip counting to 100 (2’s, 5’s, 10’s)
Chunk 2
Lesson 9: Adding to 20
Lesson 10: Subtracting from 20
Lesson 11: Word problems to 20
Lesson 12: Fluency to 20
Lesson 13: Place value
Lesson 14: Skip counting to 100 (2’s, 5’s, 10’s)
Chunk 3
Lesson 15: Number bonds to 20
Lesson 16: Adding to 20 - counting on + 1
Lesson 17: Adding to 20 counting on +2
Lesson 18: Subtracting from 20 counting back – 1
Lesson 19: Subtracting from 20 counting back -2
Lesson 20: Finding halves of a set
Lesson 21: Finding quarters of a set
Chunk 4
Lesson 22: Make equal groups
Lesson 23: Share to solve equal groups
Lesson 24: Multiplication by skip counting (2’s, 5’s, 10’s)
Lesson 25: Division by equal sharing (2’s, 5’s and 10’s)
Lesson 26: Finding halves of a set
Lesson 27: Finding quarters of a set
Lesson 28: Fractions (reading, writing, representing, ordering)
