Structured Maths Approach - a structured maths scope and sequence for teachers and students in Year 0-3.
A structured scope and sequence serves as the backbone of effective teaching and learning. It provides teachers with a clear roadmap, ensuring that each concept builds upon the foundation laid before it. By carefully sequencing mathematical topics and activities, we empower our young learners to gradually develop their skills and confidence. With a well-organized structure, teachers can create a supportive learning environment that allows students to thrive, leading to a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.
Split into four phases, giving a comprehensive unpacking for students in the classroom.
Phase three is best suited for Year 2 classrooms; or students on their mathematics learning journey with a foundational knowledge of numbers to 1,000, and addition to 100.
Phase Three covers four chunks of learning:
Chunk 1
Lesson 1: Identify, say and name numbers 1-1,000
Lesson 2: FNWS to 1,000
Lesson 3: BNWS from 1,000
Lesson 4: Ordering numbers 1-1000
Lesson 5: Comparing numbers to 1,000
Lesson 6: Place value (composing and decomposing numbers)
Lesson 7: Skip counting to 100 (2’s, 5’s, 10’s, 3's)
Chunk 2
Lesson 8: Adding to 100: counting on
Lesson 9: Adding to 100: place value - tens and ones
Lesson 10: Adding to 100: using a number line
Lesson 11: Subtracting from 100: counting back
Lesson 12: Subtracting from 100: place value - tens and ones
Lesson 13: Subtracting from 100: using a number line
Lesson 14: Word problems to 100
Lesson 15: Fluency to 100
Chunk 3
Lesson 16: Number bonds to 100
Lesson 17: Doubles to 100
Lesson 18: Adding to 100 strategies
Lesson 19: Subtracting from 100 strategies
Lesson 20: Finding halves of a set
Lesson 21: Finding quarters of a set
Lesson 22: Skip counting to 100 (2’s, 5’s, 10’s, 3's)
Chunk 4
Lesson 23: Multiplication by skip counting (2's, 5's, 10's, 3's)
Lesson 24: Division by skip counting backwards (2's, 5's, 10's, 3's)
Lesson 25: Finding halves
Lesson 26: Finding quarters
Lesson 27: Finding thirds
Lesson 28: Fractions (naming, writing, representing, ordering)
