With a room full of 23 children, each with different needs and strengths it can be tricky to make sure everyone gets the attention, help or feedback provided on their learning. For my inquiry goal, I am working on identifying students needs in writing and helping build their own reflection skills to identify if they need teacher help before I ask them. As I can't always get to all the children, I want to help build a mindset where if they need help, they can use a feedback strategy or exit slip that I designed to help let me know.
So i designed a feedback and exit slip area to help encourage my students to ask for help when needed. It is a 3 levelled system that you may have seen around or have something similar. Green: "I get it" This is for students who understand their learning and have no issues with their work. Orange: "Im getting there" This is for students who think they are ok for now but might need some work. Check in with them to make sure. Red: "I need some help" This is for students who need some help now and should work with the teacher to help with the learning. My students are working on identifying how they feel about their learning and choose the option they think works for them. Today I was working with a group working on making sure they used a full stop at the end of their idea. This student went a grabbed a "i get it" prompt to let me know she understood the learning and no longer needed my help. She was able to move away to continue writing independently. This student was working in the same group but still wanted some more help just to be sure. Without prompting, she went and got the "im getting there" prompt and I knew to check in with her a few times. Another of my students was working independently on his work. I roamed the room and saw the "i need some help" prompt. This let me know I needed to help him on his writing and he came to my teacher table. These are easy to use once your students have been taught and are confident being able to talk about their learning. My students here are 5/6/7 years old so they can be trained from any age. If you are interested in using these, they are part of my Feedback and Exit Slip Bundle available for purchase on my Teachers Pay Teachers Store, or use my code 'feedback' for a discount on your purchase from my website.
