This week I was lucky to attend the Ulearn19 conference at Rotorua, New Zealand. It was an action packed three days of meeting new people, learning new ideas and gather information/resources to bring back to my school and other teachers. I was also fortunate to be able to present two workshops as well which I will share the links again for today. This website post shares some of the key ideas and takeaways from the sessions I attended. Future of learning This amazing infographic is a great way of showing the future of learning. This encompasses key ideas around technology 4 learning, research 4 learning, environment 4 learning and assessment 4 learning. Click on the picture for the link.
Seesaw I presented two presentations on Seesaw within the classroom. The first one was using seesaw portfolios for assessment with aspects like seesaw skills, activities and fluency checks. The second was using seesaw within literacy and maths - providing teachers with links, templates and ideas on how to create activities around literacy and maths. Click on the photos below for links to the presentations. Check out my own personal reflection on my drive home thinking about the best parts from ulearn19! Check out their website also for more information. Arabella's Adventures is my Google Innovator project that came about this year. I designed (and published) the first of a technology themed picture book series; aimed at targeting key digital ideas with junior students. I really wanted to find a way to help increase awareness and skills with junior students, as quite often teachers are so busy with the core skills, safe digital practices are either left out, or taught in a limited capacity. So Arabella's Adventures was formed!

This year I have been working with teachers in my school to up skill them around digital competency and fluency in all areas. This is also my scope for my Masters project which I am currently studying (due to finish June, 2020). As part of up skilling teachers, some feedback was around a crash course, or online lessons that they could follow to build key skills around Google Apps. There are already lots out there (some are paid/free) and it really is about making one that best fits your needs. So I have put together the beginning of Mrs Priestley ICT online courses - a place where you can access a targeted learning around key digital themes.
With more courses to come, I hope that this is another avenue teachers can take to learn. As always, this is always my take and interpretation of the learning and I am no way an expert. If I can help one teacher learn something new from my courses then I am happy! So as I mentioned this week, there have been changes to the New Zealand curriculum to help create students that are future focused, critical thinkers, ready for future jobs and creating/solving problems that are relevant to them. These changes are evident in the 'technology' curriculum area; but are best met when integrated into all curriculum areas. For more information check out the website post here.
This particular long term plan has been over 20 hours of thinking, typing and planning to bring together key ideas and links that I believe make the terms of these changes (and progress outcomes) more clear and easy to implement/introduce in the classroom. A lot of these ideas have been things I have tried, seen in class or heard of and I have tried to supply links to the information the best I can. There are some links and freebie resources of my own which are linked in that I am giving away for free with the plan. I most certainly am not an expert in this area; but hope that this can help unpack these changes for teachers and students. Want a copy of the long term plan? Submissions are due 10th January 2020 Have you heard about the changes to our curriculum in New Zealand? If you were not aware, major yet fantastic changes were made to our curriculum that involved the technology curriculum area. These included the introduction of progress outcomes 'computational thinking for digital technologies' and 'designing and developing digital outcomes'. It is expected that by 2020, all schools in New Zealand are to be teaching the content whether it be stand alone, or integrated. Of course, integration across all other curriculum areas is best to ensure meaningful integration and learning opportunities. But the reality of this can be easier said than done. Especially with the other 100 things we need to do in the classroom every day! If you haven't yet heard about these changes, or checked the new changes made follow the link here. Explained simply: Computational thinking for digital technologies is all about students being able to express problems and formulate solutions in ways that means a computer can be used to solve them. Algorithmic thinking skills are important in this section. Designing and developing digital outcomes is about students becoming experts in using different technologies to create digital content for the web, interactive digital platforms and print. Also understanding how and who systems are made for; becoming confident manipulators of data and its outcome. I have posted a few times about the digital technologies in the classroom so check out my past blog posts on my website by typing in 'digital technologies' into the search bar to bring these up. I am also working on a long term plan that unpacks the progress outcomes for teachers looking for ideas on how they can implement these into their classrooms. Stay tuned for that! View lots more ideas about digital technologies from Kia Takatū ā-Matihiko below too. Google forms is a simple way of involving technology into your classroom. It can be used to promote technology use in a meaningful, yet exciting way to involve students and enhance engagement. A simple way is by using it to gather student voice! This google form asks students which one they prefer - a cat or a dog. Sure you could just ask students for a show of hands; but by asking them this through a google form it could be integrated as part of your programme in a tumble, discussion time, or checkpoint that students could complete before the learning. I have lots of previous website posts about google forms with examples and links to ways you could use it in your classroom. This is just one way, with there being MANY different ways you could use it. Just search 'google forms' on my website to bring up all the website posts. Do you use book creator? Book creator is a great free (or paid) app that students and teachers can use to create and publish books to share their learning. Book creator has inbuilt tools to help create the perfect book to share learning outcomes. Books can be published online for wider viewing, or downloaded to share on other apps like Seesaw or Youtube. Ebooks can be published for free on the book creator website which is an awesome way to create learning for a purpose. There are lots of ways that book creator can be used in the classroom. Check out this book creator ebook that shares 50 ways you can use it in your classroom!
I thought of a few digital ideas we were developing as a staff and created activity ideas linked to those. I then also added other digital ideas that could be great to develop, work on and strive for under the digital technologies umbrella. This is a template I designed, but you are able to use mine in your school, or edit the template to add your own ideas.
Check out the links here to purchase copies for yourself and your classroom. Alternatively, if you are just looking for the activities to complete in class you can find those free to download and use here.
First we talked a little bit about what it is and the purpose behind it. I then modelled the process and showed students how it works. We talked about some good guidelines when using it to help them be successful. We then got into mixed groups and started setting our scene! The students spent ages on this part - because it is the most fun! Then when they were ready they started capturing it with stop motion. This lesson was easy to incorporate into any curriculum area and engaging, fun and motivating! For more information on stop motion, check out my recent workshop session that I ran with teachers! Arabella's Adventures is my Google Innovator project from the #SYD19 Google Innovator academy. We needed to look at a problem we were facing, and think of a way of solving it. My problem was around junior students not receiving much teacher time with digital technologies and key skills to help them become confident and competent users. So I thought I would target this goal through a series of child directed picture books for students and teachers to use. Here is the first ebook of the series - How to take care of iPads. Get this ebook at the low cost of $3.00 for an introductory price!! This is for the first 100 customers so get in quick!! Find it here and get your copy!!
You can make a copy of my daily check in google form here! So easy to use with any year level students; and a great way to introduce digital technologies into your classroom practice in a fun and easy way! I created the simple above poster for students to scan when they first come in the morning! Way easier than typing out a url each day!
Last week I so incredibly fortunate to attend and present at the Digital Fluency Hui in Hawera, Taranaki. I delivered the keynote and four workshops around different areas. The aim being to build teacher competency and skill in anything digital; providing as much as I can with others! I really wanted to share my presentations with you so here are the links to the workshops I ran. If you have any questions or want any further information please let me know.
