Im not the creator of these learning styles - there is lots of literature and evidence online about these styles and which are more popular than others. Some literature authors state there are only four main ways; some say seven; I even read somewhere about nine. These seven are ones that I have worked from this year over 2021 and placed my students into. I always ask parents when students start where they think their students might prefer. Download this pdf chart if you feel this might help you unpack the learning styles of your students too!
This can be easier said than done as students quite often chop and change in their play during their play. For example, while observing two students play last term, these two started off as parallel play. They were playing with the car toys parallel to each other; with no engagement or interaction with each other. One student then went off to play with the dinosaurs (solitary play) and the other student simply was an onlooker - watched them play but didn't join in. Then one of these students got out the magnetics and they both were then engaged in cooperative play. Students can switch and change where they need to and for the play that benefits them.
Its definitely something to think about... What type of play are your students engaging with? What type of activities promote which type of play in your classroom? Can you easily spot students that are unoccupied or as an onlooker in play? What could you do for them? Check out some of my other playful learning blog posts or resources below!
I've tried a few different recipes at home for playdough and this one has been mine (and my daughters) favourite. Super simple and it was ready in about 10 minutes! Could whip up a few different colour and scent batches for a provocation or to add to your sensory play! Download the pdf with instructions here!
Updated to include both lower case and upper case letters depending on the letter tiles and things you might have available in your classroom. Download it here so you can use this in your classroom too!
In this fact file poster pack there are six posters students can use to access and learning information. These could be displayed on a wall chart, poster file display, or interactive resource for student use. These are free to download and use!
This term my class is learning about dinosaurs - so I wanted to create a learning experience where students can interact with a dinosaur through augmented reality. Of course we could watch a video and explore learning that way. But this takes it a whole other level of fun and amazingness! My students will colour and design their dinosaur before I model and show them the experience using QuiverVision. My example model below shows you how it brings it to life - the dinosaur even makes noises and you can hear it stomping around the paper.
Visit their website for more information and teacher resource packs with activities for your classroom! It really is so much fun and takes technology to new places with your students!
You can even extend your students to using the template on Seesaw (as pictured below left) or used in writing lessons with guided teaching. I love the opportunities this allows for students to build on scaffolded knowledge; so they aren't completely stumped but also being extended.
